We’d like to take this opportunity to update our members and supporters about all the exciting changes that are taking place in the organisation and take this opportunity to show our gratitude to a number of colleagues who will be embarking on new endeavours.
There have been many changes made recently at Board level with Lisa Pinney stepping down from her position as Chair and Vinny Webb and Sam Lloyd deciding to respectfully resign from their Director role. Current Vice Chair, Conrad Funnell will transition in to the position of Chair and take over on an interim basis. These exciting developments fall in line with the review of our Board structure and composition. Recruitment for these pivotal roles will commence shortly and more details will be shared via our website and social media channels in due course.
In addition to the movements at Board level, we bid a fond farewell to our CEO, David Phenis this week, and to Fern Burrage, Head of Performance, later this month. We would like to thank David for his contribution to hockey in Wales over the last 3 years and wish him well for the exciting chapter he will now embark on. We caught up with Conrad Funnell, Interim Chair, at the recent Board meeting who wanted to share his gratitude:
David has contributed enormously to the success of Hockey Wales and hockey in Wales in his time as CEO. He has led the organisation to improve experiences of hockey for our members, promoted diversity and inclusion within the sport and seen a rise in our international rankings. He has and will always be a fantastic ambassador for Hockey in Wales.
Moving forward, we have a plan which we’ll continue to execute against. We can see measurable results and positive improvements, we are now evolving our strategy with our members and stakeholders as we look forward to our next chapter.
The future of hockey in Wales remains profoundly positive, from the continued high standards portrayed by our national teams to the newly launched inclusive para hockey pathway, Flyerz.
Further exciting developments pave the way for continued investment in our robust partnership with Great Britain Hockey, centred around a united coaching framework. In addition, members will soon see the launch of a new and improved membership system and benefits package, providing a range of offers and discounts from many of our partner organisations.
The position of Hockey in Wales is extremely strong, and I am proud to continue to drive the organisation in the positive direction it is moving in.
It is an exciting time for us, as we continue to engage our members, we’ll develop and evolve our strategic intent, ensuring we are continually learning and improving. This year we will see a number of international teams on a journey to Europe including our Master’s men and women, Flyerz teams, under 21’s along with our senior women who compete in Euro Championship II and senior men who fight to sustain a top 8 position in the Euro Championships. In addition, we launch a new initiative called SMASH hockey in partnership with Street Games and a new membership system with some exciting member benefits. Despite recent changes hockey will continue to thrive and our team of passionate staff, coaches and volunteers will continue to deliver on their commitments.
Whilst recruitment for a new CEO and Board Chair continues, the interim period will see Ria Male step up and lead the organisation as CEO and South Wales Club Development Officer, Hannah Bevan will take up the position of Head of Development. Both Ria and Hannah commence their roles from 1st February; a prospect Ria is looking forward to:
Both Ria and Conrad will help maintain structure and performance at an organisational level, bringing fresh insight and renewed direction to the table. Work will continue alongside Sport Wales to deliver on our strategy, which will continue to take shape with the unwavering contribution from you, our members!
We’d like to take this opportunity to thank David, Fern, Lisa, Vinny and Sam for the time they’ve given to Hockey Wales over the years and for all the ideas, passion and energy they’ve shown towards our incredible sport. We wish them all the very best in the future!
