WELSH WOMENS U-18 SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS FINALS

Swansea University, 6th March 2012

Winners - Croesyceiliog (SE Wales)

Winners - Croesyceiliog (SE Wales)

Congratulations to Croesyceiliog, who retained their title as winners of the U18 schools Finals, played in Swansea. The round robin pool matches were played in the morning with all matches being keenly contested with all teams in Pool A gaining points – Coleg Meirion Dwyfor (Eryri) beat Ysgol Glantaf (Cardiff and the Vale) and Croesyceiliog (South East Wales) and drew with (Ysgol Bro Gwaun) Dyfed, Croesyceiliog beat Ysgol Glantaf and Ysgol Bro Gwaun, Ysgol Glantaf beat Ysgol Bro Gwaun whilst Ysgol Bro Gwaun drew with Coleg Meirion Dwyfor.

Unfortunately there were only three teams in Pool B and a despite a sterling performance, Blaengwawr (Glamorgan Valleys) were unlucky to lose to Gower College (Afan Nedd Tawe) and Christ College (Powys).  The top of the table position went to Christ College (Powys) having beaten Gower College (Afan Nedd Tawe) in their pool match.

Coleg Meirion Dwyfor (Eryri) beat Gower College (Afan Nedd Tawe) by 1 goal to nil in one semi-final but the other semi-final between Christ College (Powys) and Croesyceiliog (South East Wales) was 0 - 0 at full time
Croesyceiliog won the penalty stroke competition by 3 goals to 2.

The final was a replay of the earlier Pool match and once again it was an end to end battle which could have gone either way – Coleg Meirion Dwyfor opened the scoring in the second minute, but Croesyceiliog levelled the score in the sixth minute only to see Coleg Meirion Dwyfor score from the re-start.  The only goal of the second half was scored by Croesyceiliog in the seventh minute, so with the final score at 2 – 2 the crowd were treated to another penalty stroke competition. Croesyceiliog knew what was expected and successfully converted their penalties winning by 2 goals to 0.

Thanks to Anne Ellis (Hockey Wales President) and Caroline Spanton (Hockey Wales, Head of Development) for making the presentations, thanks to all the umpires especially Gemma Cliffe and Simon Driver (both Swansea University), thanks also to all the teachers for coaching and preparing the squads, to the players for giving us such an excellent display of hockey, to the crowd for their support, to the café crew for providing food and drinks and to Hockey Wales for supporting this event.
