In their announcement yesterday (18th December), the FIH announced rule changes from 1 January 2019. These changes involve.
– Match times to be 4 x 15’ periods to replace the normal 2 x 35’. This has been played at international level for some time.
– Removal of Player with Goalkeeping Privilege.
– Amendment to Attacking Free Hits and Defending Free Hits within the 23m area.
The full FIH announcement can be found here.
Neither Hockey Wales, nor the Welsh Hockey Umpires Association, have any desire to change the existing set of rules midway through the domestic season and as such the changes will not be implemented until 1 September 2019. However, all three knock-out senior tournaments (men and women) will trial all the changes from the semi-final stage of each competition onwards.
Clarification will be obtained regarding the changes applicable to youth hockey in due course.
