July saw us welcome students from Riverbank and St Cyres School to the National Hockey Centre in Cardiff, for the launch of Flyerz Hockey in Wales; marking the beginning of our inclusive pathway.
We were lucky enough to have a large group of supporters on the day varying from Young Ambassadors and Club Volunteers to our National Player Ambassadors and Welsh Internationals, Ella Jackson and Jo Westwood.
Ella shared her thoughts around the success of the day with us:
It was amazing to be part of the Flyerz launch in Wales. I believe it is vital for our sport to be available to everyone and that it’s a great first step to encouraging more to access our sport. I am proud to be an ambassador and to be able to help promote the event
The day consisted of a carousel of activities for the children to try followed by an opportunity to play mini matches, to which all participants were engaged in, and even the teachers turned their hand to the games.
The day was a success in so many ways and a fantastic opportunity for various reasons; launching our new inclusive hockey offer, providing quality first time hockey experiences, children having the opportunity to play hockey in an environment where they engaged with National Players and most importantly teachers saw how enjoyable and simply hockey is to deliver.
Following our launch festival, we are working closely with Penarth Ladies and Bangor City to get them set to develop their Flyerz section ready for September. This will include coach development, volunteer training and player recruitment drive. We are hoping that in years time we will be able to field our first ever Wales ParaHockey Squad in the ParaHockey Championships taking place in Antwerp 2019.
This launch wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our Young Ambassador Flyerz Coordinators who have committed so much time and effort to making the launch the success it has been.
Chloe Jordan shared her excitement with us:
Great to see Flyerz Hockey up and running after a year of preparation. I was nervous in anticipation of the event but as soon as the children turned up and I saw the smiles on their faces, I knew it was going to be a great day and Flyerz Hockey would take off!
Following this, I would like to see Flyerz Hockey become a regular activity and show how hockey can truly change lives
