Great Britain Hockey have today announced the women’s squad to face New Zealand, Australia and China in the FIH Pro League. The 20 strong squad will travel out to Oceania alongside their male counterparts this Wednesday ahead of their double header matches against New Zealand and Australia, before the women travel on to China.
Taking her place amongst the squad is senior Welsh international and GB athlete, Sarah Jones! Having made her first senior appearance for Great Britain last November during the FIH Women’s Champions Trophy held in China, Jones current sits on 97 caps (91 for Wales), meaning this selection could see her pick up her 100th cap!
The squad go head to head with New Zealand in their opening match of the tournament, a team Jones has yet to come up against:
I’m really looking forward to starting the new Pro League in a couple of weeks time with our first match against New Zealand. Playing one off games is something we haven’t experienced before and this will present a new challenge. Personally, I haven’t played against New Zealand before, however having watched them, they are a fast, direct, attacking team, which are things we have been trying to add to our game recently, so this should make for an exciting game.
Head Coach for Wales’ women’s side, Kevin Johnson expressed how this selection is a great opportunity for both Sarah and the Welsh squad:
Sarah’s selection in the first set of GB pro-league fixtures is another great opportunity for her to build on the progress she has made in recent times and her team mates and staff at Hockey Wales are all fully behind her. Her selection for GB should continue to serve as both motivation and inspiration for more Welsh hockey players to follow in her footsteps. I wish her all the best and am looking forward to seeing her build on her recent Champions Trophy experience.
