Yesterday saw Welshpool and Newtown as hosts to the National U18 Schoolgirl finals, and despite a very wet and windy start to the day, all schools were raring to go to compete for the national title.
Schools throughout Wales had participated in qualifying tournaments with the following schools representing their respective areas:
- Gower College (Afan Nedd Tawe)
- Ysgol Glantaf (Cardiff and the Vale)
- Ysgol Bro Myrddin (Dyfed)
- Coleg Meirion Dwyfor (Eryri)
- Ysgol Cwm Rhymni (Glamorgan Valleys)
- Ysgol Maes Garmon (North East Wales)
- Christ College (Powys)
- Caerleon (South East Wales)
The teams were divided into 2 pools and after a series of keenly contested matches the final pool standings were:
1st Ysgol Glantaf
2nd Coleg Meirion Dwyfor
3rd Ysgol Bro Myrddin
4th Ysgol Cwm Rhymni
1st Christ College Brecon
3rd Ysgol Maes Garmon
4th Gower College
All results from the day can be found HERE.
With the winners of the pools playing the opposite runners-up in the semi-finals we saw Ysgol Glantaf beat Caerleon 4 – 0 and Christ College beat Coleg Meirion Dwyfor 2 – 0.
The final was a very well contested match, and saw Glantaf take the lead just before the half time mark, meaning it was going to be a tense second half with Glantaf wanting to retain their lead and Christ College wanting to get a goal back to get into the game. Despite many attempts from Christ College through multiple penalty corners, they were unfortunate not to convert, but Glantaf defence stood strong and managed to hold the lead and go on to win the title with a 1-0 final result.
Reflected in the final scoreline, both teams competed immensely and the game rounded off a terrific day for the U18 Finals.
Grateful thanks to all our umpires, especially those who traveled a distance to make the day happen – appreciated your support throughout the day.
Thanks to all teachers, coaches, managers, umpires and support staff for making these finals possible, a huge amount of work is involved in the organisation of every team, as well as all the qualifying tournaments, and participating in National Finals, we appreciate the help of everyone concerned.
Now just over a week to go for the U14 National Schoolgirl finals in North Wales!
