Wales took on Italy this morning in the commencing match of the EuroHockey Championships II. It was an unfortunate loss for Wales as Italy won 3 goals to 1.

Despite the rain having stopped, it was wet under foot which caused many players to fall in this incredibly quick, competitive match.

The match was fast paced from the start with equal possession of the ball in the first quarter, providing both Wales and Italy with chances at a goal. A penalty corner was awarded to Italy at 13’ but Wales blocked their chances again at going 1-0 up.

Heading into the second quarter Wales defended well, keeping Italy from pushing into the attacking half. Wales won back to back penalty corners at 23’ but despite varying their approach, Italy’s goalkeeper denied Wales a goal.

In the final minutes of the first half at 28’, Italy won a penalty corner which led to #27 Lara Oviedo scoring the first goal of the match making it 1-0 to Italy.

Into the second half, the game was more controlled with Wales utilising space and gaining more time on the ball, but it wasn’t quite enough as Italy broke through Wales’ defence at 38’ in a quick burst and managed to bag a field goal against Wales, making it 2-0 to Italy from #28 Emilia Munitis.

At 50’ in a busy D, Italy’s #18 Federica Carta secured the 3rd goal of the match from an aerial ball making it 3-0 to Italy.

Wales continued to fight back and it paid off, as #29 Izzy Webb landed a goal from a penalty corner in the 57th minute.

In the closing minutes, Wales’ #8 Sarah Jones earned a Green Card at 58’ but it didn’t change the fate of the game, as Italy took the win at full time with 3 goals to 1 in an unfortunate loss for Wales.

Wales look ahead to their next game against Turkey which will take place tomorrow on Monday 5th August at 3.45pm.
