The final tournaments in the County Schoolgirl programme took place in Swansea on Sunday 11th December. The qualifying tournaments had been played at the beginning of November with Afan Nedd Tawe, Cardiff and the Vale, Ceredigion and South East Wales qualifying for the Cup Tournament and Carmarthenshire, Glamorgan Valleys, Llanelli and Pembrokeshire qualifying for the Plate tournament

The weather was not kind to us and competitors in the Plate competition had to battle against the rain and the wind in all three matches, the teams in the Cup did manage to play one match without rain, however, the elements did not appear to bother the players, they knuckled down and got on with it and entertained the crowd with a fine display of hockey – well done girls

Having won all three of their matches, South East Wales won the Cup competition, Cardiff and the Vale and Afan Nedd Tawe won one match, lost one match and drew with each other, they were tied on points, but, Cardiff and the Vale had the better goal difference and finished second with Afan Nedd Tawe third and Ceredigion fourth

A big thank you to Llanelli, they only had seven players available on Sunday but they still took part, borrowing players from other teams to ensure the Plate tournament went ahead.  Congratulations to Glamorgan Valleys who finished in first place, closely followed by Carmarthenshire in second place and Pembrokeshire in third

Caroline Spanton, Hockey Wales Head of Development, presented the winners and runners-up with their medals and certificates and thanked all the girls for an excellent day of hockey, despite the weather.  Caroline thanked all coaches, umpires, family, friends and volunteers for their support during the day and in the weeks prior to the tournament.  Thanks to Anne and Anita, in the Café, for providing much needed hot drinks and snacks throughout the day and a huge thank you to Jane Price for organising  all of the South Wales County Schoolgirls Finals like clockwork!
