The length of programme surrounding senior hockey requires self-motivating, self-disciplined players who only require themselves to motivate their training and play. The pride and passion of players representing their country should be evident to all in what you do day-to-day.

PHYSICAL

FITNESS AND CONDITION

Power/Strength

Power is the ability to produce force/acceleration in a short period of time i.e. explosive performance. Strength is the ability to produce maximal force.

Endurance

High intensity training aimed at developing the resistance to fatigue through sprint recovery intervals.

Endurance

Maintenance of moderate intensity activities within aerobic capacity over a period of time. Endurance training creates an improvement in game-on-game durability and the ability to recover through enhancing aerobic capacity. It underpins the ability to execute game specific training by improving the ability to recover.

Flexibility

Ability to move joints in the range of motion demanded by hockey.

Speed

Being able to move from point A to point B quickly. Speed training is aimed at enhancing neuro-muscular co-ordination, improving rate-of-force development, force production and improving the delivery of energy in anaerobic environment.

Agility

The ability to stop and change direction quickly. Agility training in a closed setting; Moving through some pre-set and pre-determined multi-directional patterns helps to develop the underpinning movement/ foot skills. Agility in an open setting;Reacting or changing direction to some external stimuli helps to develop anticipation, reactivity, spatial awareness and game reading.
