Sheila has worked in sport all of her life, starting off as a physical education teacher, rising to Head of PE before taking up a role with the old Sports Council for Wales as a Higher Executive Officer where she developed and implemented the Doping Control and Leadership Training Programmes.
Moving upwards through the Sports Council Sheila then moved across to the English Sports Council and subsequently Sport England as Head of Governing Body services.
Self-employed status followed working with, amongst others, the Welsh Sports Association and World Class Hockey where they facilitated both the English and Welsh squads debriefs after their respective Euro campaign.
Now retired, her playing career is full of honors having won 112 Welsh caps, played at 5 World Conferences / World Cups and captained the squad between 1982/84. 24 GB caps were also won and she was selected for both the Moscow and Los Angeles Olympic squads but as we all know neither squad actually played at the Olympic for political reasons. Sheila also captained the side between 1981/82.
Having retired from playing Sheila took up the whistle and rose to the heights of a FIH Grade 1 umpire. Technical roles came next with the memorable appointments being to 2 Olympics (Beijing and London), Competition Director at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, TO at the 2010 World Cup and TD for the 2012 Champions Trophy, both in Argentina.
In the past few years Sheila has been a Hockey Wales Board Director and Chair of our Competitions Committee and remains a member of the EHF Outdoor Comps Committee and also Chair of the EHF Competitions Regulations Working Group. She has also been the Welsh representative on the GB Board and we also have the huge honour of her being the GB President.
She has represented hockey on so many levels and in so many different guises it is difficult to summarise all that she has achieved but she has always, always been fiercely proud of their Welsh heritage and represented us with huge distinction throughout the hockey world.
Thank you Sheila for all you have given, and continue to give to Hockey in Wales. You are a role model for many and a very well deserved Life Member of Hockey Wales.
