This weekend saw Wales Women take on Poland in a three game test series in Walcz. The named squad boasted young talent with five new players receiving their first senior international caps during the opening game. A 3-0 win saw a brace by Hannah Cozens which led Wales to take a 2-0 lead, debutant Cari Davies sealed victory for the side after she neatly finished in front of goal after an excellent passage of play by Sarah-Jayne Thorburn.
Game two saw a closer match up with Poland asking more questions of the Welsh side. Early in the second quarter Poland opened the scoring after capitalising on a counter attack to take the lead 1-0. Wales responded soon after this with two goals in two minutes both converted by Eloise Laity. A goalless second half saw the final score remain 2-1 to Wales. These two wins also saw them take the series with one game still to play.
Wales wanted to finish the series strong and did so with a 4-1 victory. Wales’ opening goal came from a penalty corner converted by Danielle Jordan in the first quarter. Goal number two came shortly in the second quarter with Amy Burton finishing to take Wales 2-0 into half-time. Wales weren’t satisfied with their lead and doubled it in the third quarter, another two goals in two minutes were converted by Phoebe Richards and Amy Burton. Final quarter saw Poland claim a goal back from a penalty corner, however this had no further impact in the result of the game with Wales taking it 4-1 and therefore an undefeated series win.
Wales scored 9 goals over the three games, with 8 coming from open play and one penalty corner. Defensively the side was secure only giving away 3 corners and 2 goals. This series has been invaluable preparation for our senior women squad and will give them confidence going into Open Series Round 1 in Lithuania later this month.
