Saturday 27th April saw the commencement of our National Youth Finals weekend in Newtown where we were accompanied by Storm Hannah who tried all in her power to put a halt to our day with gusty winds and rain for our U15 and U18 age group finals.

Despite the torrential weather conditions, Whitchurch and Gwent U15 girls kicked off our weekend battling it out for the National U15 Title. All the action came in the second quarter, with Whitchurch taking the lead in the 21st minute, closely followed by an equaliser from Gwent in the 27th minute. Whitchurch did not allow Gwent to hold onto this draw for too long as they went back ahead with their second goal in the 27th minute. At half time Whitchurch were leaders of 2-1, and after a well-battled second half, this is how the score remained meaning Whitchurch HC became U15 Girls National Champions.

Our second match of the day, saw Eirias HC take on Swansea HC for the U15 Boys title, in matching weather conditions to the girls. A game which was taken lead by Swansea early on, Eirias held them off very well until deep into the second quarter whereby Swansea advanced their lead and saw them have the advantage of 3-0 at the half time point. Despite Eirias having their share of opportunities, Swansea’s strength pushed them on to score further goals, seeing them run out as U15 Champions with the final score of 9-0.

To conclude our Day One of Youth Finals, Northop Hall took on Swansea HC for the U18 Boys National Title. Taking an early lead in the 5th minute followed by a second goal in the 13th minute, Swansea went into half time ahead at 2-0. Despite an early second half goal from Swansea, making it 3-0, Northop Hall put up a great battle, applying plenty of pressure to the Swansea defence as well as their keeper making some fantastic saves to keep them in the game, they were rewarded in the 3rd quarter with a goal converted from a penalty stroke, bringing them back into the game at 3-1. With more chances in the last quarter, none were converted by either team, which saw the final score stand at 3-1, making Swansea U18 Boys National Champions.

Storm Hannah seemed far kinder to us on Sunday for Day Two of our Youth Finals as our U11 and U13 girls and boys started to arrive for their competitions, playing group matches to determine the winner of their age groups.

First to the stage were the U11 girls and boys, who played alternate matches allowing plenty of rest for players in-between games. The final standings for the U11 boys and girls competitions are as follows:

Boys

  1. Whitchurch
  2. Swansea
  3. Llanfair
  4. Bangor City

Girls

  1. Whitchurch
  2. Gwent
  3. Caernarfon
  4. Llanfair

As the day progressed and the U11’s departed, the U13s boys and girls teams arrived for their rounds, with some fantastic hockey on display. The final standings for their competitions are as follows:

Boys

  1. Whitchurch
  2. Penarth
  3. Eirias
  4. Dysynni

Girls

  1. Whitchurch
  2. Swansea
  3. Eirias
  4. Caernarfon

A noticeable achievement for Whitchurch HC as they were crowned Champions of all four age groups of Day Two as well as U15 and U18 Girls.

It was also great to see so many new teams making it to the National Finals, and to all other teams,  huge credit to you for achieving your spot in the National Finals, you are all amongst the top youth hockey teams in Wales.

A special thank you to our umpires and officials who committed their time this weekend to make these finals possible to play! In addition to this, THANK YOU to Irfon Bennett for committing his time as photographer this weekend, capturing the memories made by so many.
