Zak Jones, players and support staff today set off to Malaysia ahead of the FIH Series Finals which they will kick off next Friday.
For the teams taking part, this is the next stage in the challenging but thrilling road to the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
The chance to qualify for the blue riband hockey event started with the FIH Series Open back in 2018. The top placed teams in the FIH Series Open events qualified to compete in the FIH Series Finals alongside the nine highest ranked teams not participating in the FIH Pro League.
Wales head to Malaysia along with 7 other nations including; Austria (World Ranking:19), Belarus (WR:31), Brazil (WR:27), Canada (WR:10), China (WR:14), Italy (WR:32), Wales (WR:24) and the host nation Malaysia (WR:13)
We caught up with Head Coach Zak Jones ahead of their travel:
We will be playing in a new and challenging environment, up against some top quality sides, many of whom have Olympic qualification at stake, so the level of competition will be very high. However, the whole group are very much looking forward to the opportunity this presents for us to continue to develop and grow as a squad. Competition for places has been fierce but with a good blend of youth and experience, we believe we have the right balance to compete and perform to the high standards we have set ourselves
A strong 18 man squad will travel to compete, all having worked hard for their position over the last few months.
