Performance, Players

Wales’ men’s side head to Barcelona this weekend where they take on World number 8 and International heavyweights Spain in a two match test series.

An integral part of their Commonwealth Games journey, the test series will be invaluable for Wales as they step up their preparation for the Gold Coast in April. Spain, who were quarter finalists in the 2016 Olympic Games and currently sit eighth in the FIH world rankings, will provide a stern test for the Welsh side who themselves are coming in off the back of a positive 2017.

Opportunities to play teams like Spain are ones to be revelled in explains Head Coach Zak Jones:

“As a group we are relishing the opportunity of pitting ourselves against the No.8 side in the world. We are really looking forward to the challenge and fully appreciate that the margins for error will be very small. However, this level of competition is where the group aspires to be and this series is an important part of the squads development as we build towards the CWG’s and 2019 European Championships beyond”.

From playing eighth in the world rankings to eighteenth; a brisk turnaround for the men sees them further journey to play France the weekend after; a decision Jones is looking forward to

“These two series against Spain and France are also hugely important in terms of both our preparation and selection for the Commonwealth Games. I’m really looking forward to seeing how the group responds to those dual challenges over the next couple of weeks.”
