Last weekend the 2018 Mixed Internationals graced the Sport Wales National Centre for two highly energetic and passionate games. The final 20 that took on England in the two match series, were men and women selected from across Welsh clubs, Swansea City, Swansea Spartans, Rhondda Ladies, Whitchurch and Whitchurch Saints.
After an opening game that ended on a tight 1-1 draw, both teams had everything to play for going into their final game. A tense final game saw Wales losing 3-2 on aggregate at half time but by the end of the game the team had fully recovered, bringing home a 5-4 win on aggregate.
Tournament organiser and player, Ben Croxall shared his excitement around winning the series:
It’s a huge achievement for the whole squad, England have won this fixture for the last decade so it’s always a great feeling winning a game in this manor, to be 4-2 down going into the last quarter and to then score 3 goals to win the game, shows the togetherness, fight and spirit of the team. I would like to thank everyone that has been involved from all the players that tried out, making the selection so tough. To Hockey Wales for their support and to all the technical staff and umpires that helped over the weekend. Finally to all the support we received from the crowd, it was great to see so many people there supporting both teams.
We would like to wish Alison and Derek from the England management team a speedy recovery.
To date the Mixed Internationals have been one off fixtures, however this current Welsh squad are now toying with the idea of continuing as a team, and entering more tournaments when opportunity presents itself. The next tournament they’ve set sights on is the England Mixed Cup, where they’d compete against a number of teams from across the UK.
Goals: Chris Hardy x2, Jonny Gordon, Katheryn Mee and Chris Baker.
