As we start to enter an extremely exciting international season for all of our National Squads, we look to welcome France to our National Hockey Centre, Cardiff end of this month to play a 3 match test series against our Senior Women.

This test series versus France will prepare the Women for their upcoming FIH Series Finals in Valencia and EuroHockey Championship Competition in Glasgow.

As we approach the test series, Head Coach Kevin Johnson shares tells us how important this test series is:

As a team we are really looking forward to this series for a number of varying reasons. We had an enjoyable and competitive series in France earlier in the year and are keen to chart our progression from that series to now as we look to continue to build momentum ahead of a tournament heavy summer. We are also looking forward to playing a test series at home again and hope to have some passionate support there to cheer us on as well as the bonus of the matches being live streamed by S4C which we are hugely grateful for.

On a personal level for the team we will also be celebrating some significant milestones over the three games, with Leah Wilkinson about to break the all-time Wales caps record previously held by Welsh Hockey icon Paul Edwards which is an incredible feat and testament to Leah’s commitment and quality over a long period of time. I am also delighted that we may well get the chance to welcome three more players to the ‘100’ club of caps over the course of the weekend in Sian French (97), Jo Westwood (98) and Phoebe Richards (99) who have all also made an unquestionable contribution to Welsh Hockey so far in their playing careers with much more to come in the future.

This series will also see the return of Tash Marke-Jones in a Wales shirt for her first cap since the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018. Tash had taken a temporary break from the programme but I’m very pleased to see her return and her experience and quality will be a welcome addition. With the promise of three very competitive test matches alongside a number of personal and special milestones to celebrate, I would urge people to come down and support the team and help to create a great home atmosphere for International Hockey.
