Yesterday Wales men defeated Switzerland in a phenomenal 9-0 win.
After moving past an initial struggle, Wales dominated the match, which was the second of their Pool B games. The first half ended 1-0 after a swift first goal from Owain Dolan-Grey during the second quarter. A narrow lead which during the second half turned into a mammoth lead.
On their return to the pitch Wales deposited another 8 goals against a deflated Switzerland. Responsible for 4 of the 9 goals won was James Carson; he alongside fellow team mates, James Kyriakides scoring 2, Rupert Shipperley 1 and Captain Luke Hawker 1 secured the highest score from any team in the tournament so far.
Head Coach Zak Jones:
“Obviously, delighted with the result and it was a much improved performance. The Swiss are a very similar type side to the Czech Republic and like yesterday, the first half was a very tight affair. However, I was really pleased with the way the guys stuck to our principles and the process today. In the end, that is what allowed us to gain control and dominate much of the second half. It was great to score a few goals and also keep a clean sheet but we won’t get carried away. Whilst it was a good performance, as a group, we feel there is still more to come and there are still areas we can improve upon. The squad are a very focussed and humble bunch of guys, who aim to get better with every match. We will be keep our feet firmly on the ground, enjoy our rest day and then begin the preparation for the challenge of a strong Russian side on Wednesday”.
Wales will next play Russia on Wednesday 9 August at 11:45am. Their match will be live streamed through the Hockey Wales Facebook Page
