It’s not uncommon as siblings to share a lot together throughout life. As a kid you’ll share your sweets and toys and then as an adult you’ll share experiences and advice; but how often can you say you’ve shared an experience like playing for your country in the same squad at the Commonwealth Games…TWICE? Well that’s exactly what Brothers James and Dan Kyriakides can say!
The dynamic duo; born and bred in the coastal city of Swansea, will once again be heading off to compete in an international multi-sport event, involving athletes from 70 Commonwealth nations.
Hockey has without doubt been a family affair within the Kyriakides household. Both James and Dan were heavily inspired from an early age by their Father, Mike and his passion for the sport. These days whilst both boys are off competing for their country, Mike continues his love affair with the game, playing with the Welsh Masters. He told us…
We’re incredibly proud of what James and Dan have achieved and we count ourselves very lucky to have enjoyed the journey alongside them. I’m a firm believer that the more you put in, the more you get out. We see how hard they train every single day to play hockey at this level. It’s times like this that make it worth the sacrifice. We can’t wait to see them playing together on the Gold Coast in such a great Wales hockey team and hopefully spring a few surprises
After making his debut for Wales in 2012, James; who started his own hockey team at school, has gone on to rack up more than 65 appearances for Wales; with Dan, who also competes for GB, making his debut only two years later, pursuing closely behind with 59 appearances for Wales. With both regularly competing side by side, it’s no surprise the pair welcomed the incredible news, that they’d both been selected to play in the 2014 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow.
Being able to share an experience like the Commonwealth Games with my brother was pretty special. As brothers we can be quite competitive of course but this was something we could both appreciate and relish in together – James
Four years on, these two live wires are no doubt experiencing a bit of déjà vu; having both once again secured a place in the Welsh squad joining over 6,600 athletes heading to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
I’ve always looked up to James, as my older brother so now sharing this light with him; literally on a level playing field is something we can both be proud of. How many brothers can say they’ve competed side by side at not one but two Commonwealth Games together? We can! – Dan
Head Coach, Zak Jones told us the pair are very competitive on the pitch but also humble, grounded, laid back and pretty chilled out most of the time.
The 2018 Games; held between 4th – 15th April, on the Gold Coast of Australia will welcome more than 6,600 athletes and team officials from 70 Commonwealth nations. Full Hockey_Schedule.
