For many years, changing age groups from odds (U11s, U13s, U15s and U18s) to evens (U12s, U14s, U16s and U18s) has been suggested and discussed by the Competitions TAG without any changes being made.

Last year, via the Sport80 membership system, Hockey Wales was able to compare data from 2018/19 with 2019/20 and establish trends of growth, retention and/or drop off in order to identify any areas in need of change within our competitions structure. The data did not indicate a requirement to make the change from odds to evens at that time.

This year however provides a unique opportunity that we would like to capitalise on. Due to COVID-19 we have seen a reduced number of members throughout Wales and do not feel that a comparison of data between 2019/20 and 2020/21 would be reflective, consequently we feel this is an opportunity to implement and trial a change of age groups for our Youth Competitions structure.

From September 2021, our Youth Competitions format will be as follows:

National Finals will be held, at Sport Wales National Centre, at these age groups. U16’s and U18’s finals will be 11-a-side with U12’s finals being 7-a-side. A decision regarding the format of U14’s will be made by the Competitions TAG, towards the end of 2021 (membership data should be submitted by 31st October annually).

There is no change to age groups with regard schools’ competitions which will remain at U12’s, U14’s, U16’s and U18’s level.

All Hockey Wales domestic competitions will continue to be reviewed annually by the Competitions TAG.
