DRAPER & MACKENZIE HELP BRING HOME THE TITLE FOR GB!
Last weekend saw the breath-taking final of the 2018 Sultan of Johor Cup, where Team GB brought home the title after securing a superb victory over India.
The GB line-up, who throughout the tournament took on New Zealand, Japan, Australia and hosting nation Malaysia alongside two-time title champions India, was made up of Wales’ very own Jacob Draper and Cardiff & Met player, Callum Mackenzie.
Catching up with Draper on his return from Malaysia, he told us representing GB again has enabled him to achieve one of his biggest ambitions:
Being selected to compete in Malaysia, against the best in the world, at an internationally known tournament has been incredible. It’s a complete honour to represent Great Britain again and live a massive goal of mine.
Throughout the tournament, Draper played his part fiercely alongside Mackenzie, making their Cardiff & Met Coach, Walid Abdo very proud. Abdo told us he and the club are beyond proud of both boys and the way they played:
As a club we are extremely proud of them both. The Elite Development Programme has been a positive experience for all the athletes involved at Cardiff & Met. Both Jacob and Callum are great guys who have worked hard to get to where they are in the game and totally deserve this accolade. I’m looking forward to seeing both and sharing the experiences they had in the tournament. Every game I managed to watch, they both made a significant impact. Both have a lot to offer at this level and I’m looking forward to seeing both flourish and take the next step. Hopefully they can come back fresh and ready to tackle the challenge of the EHL.
For a thrilled Draper, the win still hasn’t quite sunk in:
Winning the tournament was completely overwhelming. We always had the skill and tactical knowledge to compete against the others, but I didn’t know how we’d fair against the heat and humidity of Malaysia. As a team we clicked so well and I’m sure this helped us to get over the line and better what we’d done the previous year. It still hasn’t sunk in. I’m just so happy and proud.
Congratulations Team GB!
