With Flyerz Week upon us, we take this opportunity to celebrate the beginning of our Flyerz Hockey journey. Most commonly known as ParaHockey, the disability inclusive pathway for Hockey is taking its first steps with two of our Inclusive Welsh clubs, who have been working hard to develop the foundations to cater for young people with Learning Disabilities, in order to provide them with quality Hockey experiences.

Our journey began when our Platinum Young Ambassadors returned from the ParaHockey Championships 2017 in Amsterdam, where both Harri and Chloe were keen to kickstart the ParaHockey Pathway in Wales, widening the opportunity the play hockey in Wales.

Hannah Bevan, Hockey Wales National Inclusion Lead has expressed her excitement for the Flyerz launch:

As an individual who feels very strongly about everyone having the opportunity to access all sport and physical activity, the new journey of Flyerz Hockey is something that I’ve become extremely passionate about. Just from speaking to a number of individuals who in the past have been denied the access to play sport, really disheartens me but motivates me even more to ensure we have an inclusive Hockey pathway that overcomes any barriers and challenges that anyone may face wanting to play Hockey. This is only the start of our journey, and I know that Hockey has the power to change lives, not just through playing, but by becoming part of the Hockey Family, and once you’re in, you’re hooked, and I want this opportunity to be available to all.

The next step of our journey will be shaped by both Penarth Ladies Hockey Club and Bangor City Hockey Club, whom will be the first two clubs in Wales to develop a Flyerz Hockey section in their club, as a result of their passion for inclusive sport.

Through this Flyerz Week, you will learn more about those who are involved within the journey so far. If you have an interest in becoming part of the Flyerz Family as a player or volunteer, please contact Hannah Bevan on hannah.bevan@hockeywales.org.uk
