It was a cold day in North Wales but the eight qualifying teams for the U16 Schoolgirl Finals showed true spirit with some great performances.
The pool rounds were spilt over two locations with Bishopston, Monmouth, Preseli and Maes Garmon in Ruthin (Pool A), and Glantaf, Caereinion, Cwm Rhymni and Botwnnog playing in Denbigh (Pool B).
Following several closely contested matches in the morning’s Pool rounds, it was Bishopston and Monmouth that went through from Pool A, with Glantaf and Caereinion successfully through from Pool B.
The first of the afternoon’s semi-finals saw Pool A winners Glantaf, against the runners up of Pool B Monmouth Girls School. It was an incredibly close contest with the final score after full-time at 1-1 taking the teams into a shootout to decide who progressed in the competition. Both goalies stepped up to the challenge, but it was Glantaf who went through to the final with a 2-1 win.
The second semi-final saw Pool A winners Bishopston take on the runners up of Pool B, Caereinion. Once again it was a closely contested game and, with the final score line at 0-0, time for another shoot-out. All players contested the shoot-out well, with Bishopston taking a 3-0 win to go through to meet Glantaf in the final.
After a long but enjoyable day of hockey, the players did their schools proud both with their hockey and positive attitude. It was a great final with all the girls showing good skills, but with a 5-0 score line it was Glantaf who took the victory and were crowned U16 Schoolgirl Champions 2020.
