Hockey Wales has confirmed the formal appointment of Ria Burrage-Male as Chief Executive Officer.

Ria joined the full-time staff team in September 2017 as Head of Development and became interim CEO in February. She has represented Wales at all levels and achieved 33 senior caps following her senior debut in 2002.

“I am delighted that the Chair and Board have confirmed my appointment as Chief Executive on a permanent basis. My role as Interim CEO over the last 9 months has seen Hockey Wales continue to achieve success on and off the field. Our senior men retained their position in the top division of the EuroHockey Championships; our Under 21 women secured promotion to the top division; Leah Wilkinson became Wales’ most capped sportsperson and Sarah Jones, Leah Wilkinson and Jacob Draper are competing well for selection to Tokyo 2020, following a great year with Great Britain.", said Ria.

“As we look ahead to 2020 and beyond, I am excited to embark on new opportunities and challenges as Hockey Wales launch our new strategy where we place value on engagement, strong partnerships and thriving environments. The team and I want to ensure everyone has the opportunity to achieve their potential and have the opportunity to experience our sport. We endeavour to address participation challenges by engaging with every primary school child in Wales to create a positive hockey experience and give every school a direct link with our clubs. We want to ensure there are no barriers to participating in our sport and will continue to develop initiatives and alternate ways to play the game.”

“I am excited about our future, and look forward to engage and collaborate with our members to drive our sport, together.

Hockey Wales chair, Conrad Funnell, added:

Ria continues to show her dedication and love of hockey. Throughout this year, she has continually demonstrated her capability to lead Hockey Wales and I am super excited to see her develop and grow into the role. With the upcoming launch of our new Game Plan we are truly pleased that she will lead us into this next chapter.”
