Hockey Wales COVID-19 Update (amended 14.08.20)

Updated: Aug 14

As the Welsh Government continues with a phased approach to Wales coming out of lockdown, Hockey Wales have considered the information and advice provided in the most recent announcement and are now in a position to provide an update to members and the wider hockey family.

Detailed information on the phases referred to in this statement can be found on the Hockey Wales website in the ‘Return to Play Model'.

COVID-19 Officer:

Prior to making a return to hockey it is a requirement for your club to appoint a COVID-19 Officer and inform Hockey Wales – to register your COVID-19 Officer click here.

The Officer will fulfil the role of liaising with other clubs, associations, local and National Sporting Organisations and other relevant stakeholders in relation to your organisation’s response to COVID-19, further information on this role can be found here.

Age 11 and under:

In line with Government guidelines, from the 10 August 2020, players aged 11 and under can move to phase 3 of the ‘Return to Play Model’ - ‘Adapted Contact Training’ to enhance readiness for return to contact.

It is important to note that this is restricted to no more than 30 people in a session including coaches. When considering numbers, please think carefully about appropriate coach/player ratio.

Please continue to follow Hockey Wales Club Hockey guidance to ensure everyone stays safe.

Over 11's:

Remain in Phase 2 of the ‘Return to Play Model’ - 'Non-Contact Training' to develop readiness for adapted contact hockey.

It is important to note that anyone aged 11 and under joining an over 11's training session have to adhere to the Phase 2 requirements.

Please continue to follow Hockey Wales Club Hockey guidance to ensure everyone stays safe.

Elite Sport

We have been working with Welsh Government Representatives on our elite return to hockey. Crucially, it must be remembered that the Welsh Government will be putting in place different guidelines/phases for the return of elite sport and it is highly likely that it will result in training being undertaken by performance athletes earlier than the phased approach above.

For clarity ‘elite return to hockey’ will include the Wales Senior Squads and Performance Clubs that have Senior Welsh Representatives on their squads. In this case, the only club teams in Wales that will be permitted to train under the ‘elite return to hockey’ rulings are Swansea HC (W1) and Cardiff & Met (M1).

Facilities

Each facility provider would have undertaken their own risk assessment for a safe return to sport. We strongly advise that all clubs engage with facility providers and adhere to their guidelines.

Further information

We will review the Activity Phase at the end of August and continue to monitor the necessary advice and guidance as it evolves. We will also look to share good practice with as much notice as reasonably possible given the circumstances.

Hockey Wales would like to extend our thanks for your patience and understanding at this time.
