Hockey Wales Join Diversity Champions Programme

An exciting next journey in our commitment to Equity and Inclusion is about to begin. We are embarking on a new challenge and stepping onto the Stonewall Diversity Champions programme, all as part of our journey on becoming an equitable organisation.

The Stonewall Diversity Programme is the leading employers’ programme for ensuring all LGBT staff are accepted without exception in the workplace. The programme will support us in embedding LGBT inclusion into our workplace, attract and retaining the best talent, building our professional network, and learn from the expertise working within the field.

Hannah Bevan who leads on Inclusion for the organisation talks about the involvement on the programme:

“The Diversity Champions programme is something that we’ve always had an ambition to become part of but now feels the right time as we take the journey to truly embed inclusion into our organisation.

"Many conversations within our sector focus around ensuring all work being delivered out in communities and clubs is inclusive, but we are now highlighting the importance of inclusion from within.

"It’s a priority for us as a workplace that we are providing an inclusive environment for all staff and board members to where they feel accepted as we know this will then have a positive impact on the work in which we are delivering externally.”

Ffion Grundy, Head of Programmes at Stonewall Cymru is excited to have Hockey Wales on board with the programme.

“This year Rainbow Laces campaign will continue to highlight the incredible power sport has to build a sense of community, bring people together and make our lives richer.

"This year the COVID-19 pandemic is having a big impact on LGBT communities, with trans people, bi people, LGBT people of colour, disabled LGBT people and LGBT people in poverty having a particularly tough time as a result of the impact of isolation. The impact of COVID-19 means that many of us need sport and physical activity more than ever.

That is why it is so important, together or apart, online or on the pitch, we build on our work to make sport everyone’s game.

"It is great to see Hoci Cymru / Hockey Wales taking this work forward, by joining the Diversity Champions programme they will be delivering the message of the importance of inclusion in hockey to everyone in Wales.”
