Hooked on Hoci Launches again for 2019/2020
Updated: Nov 21, 2019
Many of you will have heard about our exciting Hooked on Hoci programme! The initiative was created principally for primary schools across Wales following consultation with member hockey clubs, local authorities and of course, the schools!
The main purpose of the Hooked on Hoci programme is to ensure consistent, excellent and meaningful experiences for young people aged 7 – 11 in primary schools across Wales.
Elliot Pottinger, national lead for Hooked on Hoci said;
I believe the programme of session delivery, cluster festivals and teacher training has the opportunity to raise physical activity levels and contribute to improving physical literacy for children at an important time in their lives. Another crucial element of the initiative is to improve or create school club links. We anticipate that the programme will have an important impact on raising participation for clubs’ junior sections. Hockey Wales believes that if young people are exposed to the sport early then there is a fantastic opportunity to keep them engaged as part of the vibrant Welsh Hockey Family - Elliot Pottinger, Club Development Officer & Hooked on Hoci National Lead
In terms of area plans, there will be activity happening near you! In the first year of the programme, sessions took place in over 100 schools across 12 local authorities. The programme is running for a period of three years and the plan is to engage schools in every Local Authority area within a 10km radius from a club.Hockey Wales would love for your club to be involved. The Hooked on Hoci programme is led by Club Development Officers across Wales. Support is needed with session delivery, running the Festivals and supporting the teachers who take on the 4689 qualification. If your club would like to be involved in any way, please contact your local CDO.
Hooked on Hoci is also designed to support clubs, as we understand for some, you may be at full capacity with your junior section. Our CDOs can help find ways either to increase capacity so you can take on more players or select areas in which the programme is genuinely needed, for example clubs who would like to create a junior section or would like help attracting more players.
