Yesterday eight schools from across Wales came together to brave the cold to compete for the title of Hockey Wales U18 Schoolgirl Champions.
Whilst we welcomed some regular attendees back to national finals, it was great to see some “new” names on the schedule.
The two Pools were made up of teams from Howell’s School (Cardiff and the Vale), Ysgol Trefan (Eryri), Ysgol Uwchradd Caereinion (Powys), Alun School, Mold (North East Wales), Gower College (Afan Nedd Tawe), Ysgol Bro Dinefwr (Dyfed), Caerleon (South East Wales) and Ysgol Cwm Rhymni (Glamorgan Valleys).
After a round-robin series of three matches each, it was Ysgol Uwchradd Caereinion and Ysgol Bro Dinefwr who topped Pool A, with Howell’s School and Ysgol Tryfan going through from Pool B.
In the semi-finals, Howell’s School beat Bro Dinefwr by 5 goals to 0 and went through to the final to face the winner of the second match between Ysgol Uwchradd Caereinion and Ysgol Tryfan. This game saw a full time score of 0-0 so the result had to be decided via a penalty shoot-out which Ysgol Tryfan won by 2-0.
The stage was set for an exciting final and we were not disappointed.
Howell’s School kept Ysgol Tryfan under constant pressure and were rewarded with a goal from a penalty corner as the first half came to an end. Howell’s School continued to attack in the second half but superb defending by Ysgol Tryfan denied them another goal resulting in a 1 – 0 victory for Howell’s.
Thanks to our umpires, especially Bec, Callum, George, Meg and Rebecca from Swansea Hockey Club – we are grateful for your support and hope you have warmed up!
Bill Riley, HW Board Director and Competitions TAG Chair, presented the medals and congratulated all the players, their coaches and managers on qualifying for the national finals.
Bill thanked everyone involved in a successful day, including Howell’s School and Ysgol Tryfan for a very entertaining final which could have gone either way.
