National Indoor Cup Finals Weekend 2019!

This weekend saw the return of the action-packed Welsh National Indoor Finals. A tournament that runs across the weekend, seeing 6 women’s teams and 6 men’s teams battle it out for the Indoor title!

The women were up first, kicking off the games on Saturday 19th with a tense game between Dowlais and Gwent,who both fought hard in their opening match, ending equal on 3-3. Reigning champions Whitchurch Saints took to the pitch next against Penarth, which ended with Saints edging the win of 2-1.

The day continued with Dowlais, Whitchurch Saints, Penarth, Gwent, Ardudwy and Swansea all battling it out for indoor success. After 11 games, the winner was decided in the final game, whereby Swansea were comfortably winning at half time with 5 goals to nil, but this didn’t hinder a valiant effort by Whitchurch who brought it back during the second half. After a well contested half, Swansea managed to maintain the win with the final score being 5-3 to Swansea.

Final standings for the day, saw Swansea become National Indoor Womens Champions, and will go on to represent Wales in Europe next year.

Day two of the tournament saw the men take to the stage; with Penarth and Whitchurch up first, battling it out in a well-contested game, both teams getting equal opportunities on goal and reflected in the final score of 2-2.

The day pushed on with PenarthSwansea CityCardiff University, Cardiff & Met, Whitchurch and Gwent all lashing out passionate performances; competing for the Indoor title.

The day provided some impressive games tallying up fantastic scores shown in the total goals scored of 77 in 11 games!

To conclude an action packed day and weekend of hockey, the final standings were all to play for in the last game, where 1st – 4th position were all still up for grabs. With Met running out 9-0 winners against Swansea City, this meant that Cardiff Met retained their Indoor title for the 6th year and will take another trip next year to represent Wales in their respective Club Indoor Challenge competition.
