Penarth Ladies are moving up!
Penarth Ladies HC have received the great news that they will be promoted to the National League for next season.
The decision by the West Clubs Womens Hockey League (WCWHL) to promote Penarth Ladies HC and Bristol University was made having considered all the constraints with the restrictions currently in place, with the Welsh side earning their place following attaining the runners up position in 19/20 season.
Speaking of the promotion Coach Dafydd Tomos explained what this means to the club and the impact having a second team competing in the National League will have within Wales,
“It’s an extremely important step in the development of both Penarth Ladies Hockey Club and women’s hockey in Wales.
“I’ve felt for a long time that we have more than enough home-grown talent and to have two Welsh teams competing at National League level is a great opportunity.”
Speaking about the ambition of the club Dafydd told Hockey Wales of what lay ahead with this opportunity,
“There will be plenty of challenges ahead but the club has shown its ambition to grow, not only at the top of the club but, all our senior and junior teams, and it’s exciting now to be able to offer those juniors National League hockey, on their doorstep.”
The club were promoted from the Welsh Premiership just two years ago and adapted incredibly well to achieve their runner up place in their first season in the Premier Division 1 of the WCWHL,
“The girls will have to show their ability to adapt again, and it’s my job as coach and our job as a club to ensure we provide the environment, challenge and support to ensure we are ready for the step up in intensity and skill level.”
Hannah Bevan, Head of Development for Hockey Wales, is delighted with the promotion and explains what it means to the sport,
“This is great news for Penarth and the game in Wales. The club have worked hard over the years in supporting player development and this is a well-earned reward.
“To have another club in the National League gives our young players aspiration and provides the wider Hockey Family with news to celebrate after what has been a difficult time for us all.”
Congratulations to Penarth Ladies Hockey Club and good luck!
