With an ever-growing appetite for Indoor Hockey across South East Wales, and with the interest so high this year to play more indoor during the off-season, the decision was made to expand on last years Summer League. The league has been played across 7 dates between May-August at USW Sport Park, where 8 teams; Whitchurch A, Whitchurch B, Rhondda A, Rhondda B, Gwent, Dowlais, Howardians and Penarth competed. Double the number of last years participating teams!

The beauty of this league, is that it has allowed opportunity to develop players that have never played indoor hockey before, through positively using the current experience within the clubs. An example of this is how Whitchurch have used their first team indoor players to coach and guide the teams and new players, whilst taking a sit back on the playing front.

Fi Tibbett, 1st Team Player, Whitchurch Hockey Club, has said:

The indoor development league has been very beneficial to WHC as it gives the whole club the opportunity to get involved. The players have really enjoyed being able to try out the variation of hockey and it has given coaches the chance to discover some new talents. As a club we have also found it useful for the experienced players from last season’s Europe squad to further their knowledge by helping with coaching, managing and umpiring whilst passing on experiences. As a result of the league we have a wider talent pool to work with in preparation for the Euro championships in February

The buzz for indoor hockey has really shown throughout the duration of the league, something Kay Tyler of Rhondda Ladies has expressed how the demand has been growing in their club after entering one team for the first time ever 3 years ago:

Entering two teams in this year’s Summer League has been a huge step forward for our club’s indoor section. Our new players loved the experience and it was brilliant to see their game skills develop so quickly during the tournament. We now hope to enter two teams in the South Wales Women’s League Indoor competition in December, which is fantastic!

Throughout the course of the league, every goalscorer and player of the match has been recorded by way of recognising and rewarding players who’ve taken part, especially those having played for the first time.
