King George playing fields based in Swansea, welcomed six Men’s Masters teams last weekend, all competing for the Hockey Wales Cup 2017/18.

The teams were split into two groups with Pool A made up of Bridgend, Cardiff & Met and Penarth, while Pool B featured Swansea and Neath (entering a combined team), Whitchurch and Llan & Caerphilly.

First up were last year’s champions Bridgend facing Cardiff & Met in a tightly contested game, Cardiff emerging victors 3-2. Cardiff went on to face a highly charged Penarth next in an end to end game finishing 2-2. Seething from their opening match, Bridgend went head to head with Penarth in the final group stages, powering through an incredible win, triumphing with an 8-0 win.

Pool B opened with Swansea against Whitchurch and a single goal scored by Swansea was the final result. Whitchurch faced Llan & Caerphilly next putting 5 past them before Swansea took on Llan in the last group game knowing a draw would leave them pool toppers, they emerged winners 4-1.

The Semi-Finals were very close, Cardiff beating Whitchurch 2-1 before Bridgend lost to Swansea 1-0, a goal scored in the final minute. Penarth beat Llan & Caerphilly 4-0 to claim 5th spot whilst the 3rd/4th playoff saw Whitchurch beat Bridgend 3-1.

The last game of the day saw Swansea take on Cardiff; unsurprisingly the game was deadlocked at 2-2 full time, so the dreaded shootout took place with Swansea gaining the upper hand on the 8 second shuffles winning 3-1.

Congratulations to Swansea City and Neath who are this year’s Hockey Wales Welsh Men’s Masters champions.
