Swansea City European Adventure 2017
May 31st, will see the Swansea City Spartans depart from Cardiff for the start of their 2017 European Club Championship 1 adventure. The tournament is being held in Siaulai, Lithuania from 2nd – 5th June with the return journey bringing the squad back to Wales on 6th June. The Squad has been involved in 4 weeks of preparations, including two friendly matches against Whitchurch, who will represent Wales in Challenge 11 in Vienna and we wish them all the best.
The Spartans clearly have a hard task ahead as out of the original squad of 16, only 13 are able to travel. In addition six of the players have been on International duty in Scotland and Ireland and will be travelling back to Cardiff and almost immediately will be meeting up with the squad to travel to Lithuania. Let us hope for no injuries and that their fitness will carry them through the tournament.
Captain Nat Blyth told us: “Swansea Spartans are very much looking forward to the challenge ahead of them. Europeans always present the squad with an intense competition environment playing so many games within a few days. The Spartans are focused and are ready to face the variety of hockey styles they will come across’’.
Coach Toby Nichols shared:‘’Having had good preparation leading up to the tournament and on the back of the senior women winning a test series in Scotland we are in great shape and looking forward to the challenge. European club tournaments challenge us in a different way to EHL, the physical demands as well as adapting to different styles of play we are used to, but we have to hit the ground running. An exciting challenge ahead with some unfamiliar opposition from Belgium and Lithuania’’.
