Sunday 8th July saw Hockey Wales’ brightest new hockey initiative, the Summer 7’s make its mark on the South West!

Holding the first tournament of its kind in South West Wales, we welcomed sides from Swansea City, Carmarthen, Pembroke County and Aberystwyth University to King George V Playing Fields in sweltering heat.

Water bases are widely renowned as the best surface to play on, and this sentiment was echoed doubly with the water cannons coming on at the start of the second round of fixtures. A lovely downpour helped the players to cool down as temperatures easily broke the 30 C mark on the South coast.

The Pembroke County squad literally soaking themselves in the water from the turf to cool down!

With the elite company of Mixed Welsh Internationals on the adjacent pitch, the day turned into a feast of hockey for everyone involved!

Teams all played each other twice with scores being worked out on aggregate before a final winner was announced. Pembroke County eventually ran out winners with all of them bagging themselves tickets to the Euro Hockey Under 18 Boys Championships in Cardiff as a result.

Here are some very happy winners:

Despite the long journey, Aberystwyth University were great to have along for the day and provided fantastic entertainment on and off the pitch:

Carmarthen also made their first Summer 7s outing in the scorching heat:

Expressing his pride and excitement around another successful Summer 7’s event, National Initiatives Lead, Tom Little:

Its great to see the Summer 7’s growing so quickly throughout Wales. We started this project in 2017 just hosting it on one site in North Wales, now we have 4 established sites and a hunger from clubs to deliver more. The long-term aim of this project is to provide opportunities for our member clubs to play hockey for 12 months a year, we’ve still got a long way to go, but events like this show just how passionate our membership base is to play more and more hockey

There are still Summer 7’s tournaments your club can get involved in nationwide. For more information on these check out Hockey Wales socials or contact Tom Little (National Initiatives Lead)
