WALES DEFEAT SWISS IN EUROHOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS II
Wales U18 Boys beat Switzerland 2 – 0 Goals from Miles Margetson and Tim Hodges secure first win Wales need to avoid defeat in final group game to make semi finals
Yesterday evening saw Wales U18 Boys gain their first win of the EuroHockey Youth Championships II. Both teams were playing their second game of the competition, with Wales looking to build upon their draw with Scotland and the Swiss side keen to bounce back after a loss to the Czech Republic.
Wales went ahead after ten minutes in the Pool B clash, with Miles Margetson scoring his second goal in as many games. The Chester midfielder found himself in space on the left hand side of the circle and well struck backhand shot flew past Timo Buetlar in the Swiss goal. Despite long periods of domination in terms of both territory and possession, Wales were unable to add to their lead before the half time break.
The Swiss continued to frustrate the Welsh side in the second half and a combination of well organised Swiss defence and a lack of execution from the Welsh at penalty corners saw the scoreline stay the same as the teams entered the final quarter. Twelve minutes from time, Bridgend’s Timothy Hodges was able to capitalise on good initial work from Jude Ellis and double Wales’ lead. Wales managed to see out the remainder of the game with Switzerland’s only chance of note coming from a penalty corner.
Wales will on Wednesday face Czech Republic in their final group game of the tournament starting at 18:00. A positive result for the hosts will see them progress to the semi finals.
