With a 9th place finish up for grabs in their final game, Wales’ men took on South Africa in the knowledge a victory would beat their ranking at the start of the week, whilst also capping a fine week of action on the Gold Coast.

With South Africa sitting 9 places above Wales in the world rankings it was also another fantastic opportunity for the men to test themselves against a team that are used to big tournament games.

With a style of play that has attracted a number of fans on the Gold Coast this week, coupled with some action packed encounters over the course of the tournament the vocal crowd were behind the men in red from the outset.

The game started at an even pace with both teams having possession, however it was Wales who created the most chances but the South Africa keeper stood firm. In the second quarter South Africa got on the front foot and took the lead through a well taken goal. This spurred Wales on who equalised through defender Gareth Furlong who scored through a fizzing penalty corner, his 4th of the week.

After the break Wales took the lead when the pressure finally told and James Carson cooly slotted home from a penalty corner. With the game in the balance South Africa managed to equalise again before James Carson added his 2nd of the match to give Wales a 3 – 2 lead with a few minutes to play.

Wales saw out the final minutes to take the victory and with it a 9th place finish for 2018.
