Wales Player Pathway 2020-21
Over the last 12 months Hockey Wales has undertaken a detailed review and consultation process, resulting in changes to our junior player pathway aligning it closer to the requirements for successful future transition of players into senior performance squads.
This review has allowed us to create a structure that is relevant to manage the preparation and competition structures that we face within our National Age Group (NAGs) programme of activity.
Whilst we were preparing for a complete transformation of the player pathway, the recent impact of COVID-19 has resulted in us scaling this back, with the upper end of the pathway now being rolled out in time for an October 2020 start, and the entry levels of the pathway to remain as they are with a view to change over to a new system in September 2021.
The 360 Centres will continue as previous years and remains as the entry level to our player pathway.
Players will be able to self-nominate and, during the month of September, we will communicate how and when the portal will be open for registration.
There will be several centres across the country and delivered in a similar format to previous.
Players at this level can be nominated by their 360 coaches to move up to the Regional Performance Centres.

Regional Performance Centres
This represents a new part of the player pathway and will form our sub-NAGs level of activity.
This level will act as a Regional delivery model for all NAGs players as well as those who have been moved up from the 360 programme and working their way towards National Age Group representation.
There will be 160 places on offer at this level and players will be coached by the National Age Group coaching staff across 3 newly appointed Regional Performance Hubs, with these being located at:
South Central – National Hockey Stadium, Cardiff
South West – Swansea University
North – Eirias Park, Colwyn Bay
These venues have been chosen as pathway partners due to the quality and location of facility. They also provide opportunities to hold several off-pitch initiatives that we will be running alongside the pathway activity.
National Age Group teams
There will be separated U16 and U18 age group teams for both training and competition purposes, although fluidity will remain in place for players to move between groups as and when necessary or desired.
Coaches will be placed with specific teams to aid continuity, identity and the building of effective relationships with players and the provision of effective, robust and consistent feedback to all players.
As a result of changing the upper end of the pathway, coaching vacancies are now open for application for all the National Age Group coaching positions.
National Age Group Coaches will be required to operate at the Regional level, which equates to 9 Sunday sessions between October and April, as well as all the normally expected National Age Group camps which are based around school holiday periods.
