WALES SECURE WIN IN OPENING HOCKEY SERIES MATCH AGAINST TURKEY!
Yesterday in their opening game of the Hockey Open Series, Wales’ women’s side went head to head with Turkey. The game ended 1-0 to Wales after a relatively equal matched game. Wales held the ball well despite the constant pressure from Turkey, seeing plenty of chances in the first two quarters of the game but all of which just missed the mark, leaving it 0-0 at half time.
Wales sought to keep constant pressure against their Turkish counterparts throughout the game, attempting to cause mistakes amongst their defensive line. The third quarter saw Wales’ first penalty corner of the game, with a replay being granted after a Turkish defender broke early. Turkey were able to clear their lines but by the end of the third quarter Wales had secured a goal through #24 Amy Burton. In the closing moments of the third quarter, a penalty corner was award to Turkey but Wales held strong, keeping their net empty.
Eager to capitalise on their first goal, the game continued with more offensive play by Wales; cards were handed out, but all to Turkish players as Wales pushed on again to try and use their one-man advantage but the game ended 1-0 to Wales. A good start to their campaign.
Head Coach Kevin Johnson said:
I’m very pleased with the result especially given it was our first game in the tournament against an opponent who made life difficult for us at times. Every game here will have its own unique set of challenges so I’m pleased we have met the first one with a win and we look forward to our next match against an experienced Ukraine team where we will be looking to improve our performance levels.
Yesterday’s game also saw Captain, Leah Wilkinson take home her 150th cap for Wales. Wilkinson currently holds the record for ‘Most Capped Welsh Female Player’; an incredible achievement for the young captain. Wilkinson told us:
I’m delighted and proud to have achieved my 150th cap today. It’s taken a lot of years to get here. Over those years I’ve been lucky enough to play with some amazing players and be coached by some fantastic coaches. Hopefully I have some more caps in me!! The most important thing today was that we were able to achieve the win against Turkey and now how we go into our game against Ukraine.
