Adding to the Welsh success at the EuroHockey Club Challenge competitions, Whitchurch HC Men were one of the two teams promoted from EuroHockey Challenge II Men.

We managed to speak to Whitchurch Coach, Pete Bowles, to hear about what he thought of the overall experience.

We knew the tournament would be tough but also that we had the ability to do really well if we stayed focussed on our plans. We lost a close game in our group opener against Zelina from Croatia, 3-2. We then showed our class in the second group game, beating Bolu Belediyesi from Turkey 6-1, scoring some absolute belters. In the final we knew we would be fresher than Gramarians from Gibraltar having had a rest day. We gave them a couple of soft goals but I never had any doubt that we could score if we kept playing in the right areas. I am immensely proud of the team for their attitude in the final 10 minutes when we were 2 goals down. We found another gear and created multiple chances. To equalise with less than 2 seconds on the clock and show the minerals to win on a shootout is a massive credit to the character and spirit of the squad. Those are the sort of days that you play/coach/manage/volunteer for and I’m so happy that the whole group got to experience it.

Big congratulations is in order for the team and club, and we’re sure that other Welsh clubs will join us in congratulating them on their success.
