Pupils from across Gwynedd have had the opportunity to embrace leadership, and Ysgol Brynrefail is one such school.

It has allowed pupils through the Hockey Makers award to become “exceptional role models and learn so much around the development of lifelong skills and for them to adjust their forms of communication to support varying needs. Additionally, it has taught them how to adapt sporting activities so that everyone can be engaged, whilst they have positive experiences and want to continue to be engaged beyond the school setting.”

Bryn Refail wanted to get leaders qualified so they could offer junior players the chance to develop new skills, improve their knowledge of the sport and to enable some succession planning to occur for Caernarfon Hockey Club by making sure there are more leaders to become coaches in the future to help run the club.

Ruth Jackson said “ Many of the leaders have gained in confidence and have started to coach the younger age groups. This is great for the local club as they now have more people available to help and the older junior players are acting as role models providing inspiration as to what they can achieve within the club. It can also help some pupils with their education especially those studying for GCSE and A Level PE and the WBQ.”

We have seen 8 leaders are now helping coach on a Wednesday night in junior training at the club.

Aspects from this initial work with leaders has meant a plan is being developed where the club would like an external person to monitor and ask the leaders to plan a session and come and watch them deliver it, give feedback and continue the development cycle This person could then give some feedback and tips on how to improve and allow self-development to occur . The aim is that some of these leaders can lead sessions on their own or at least take on the lead role.

Many Students have seen the Impact on them the course provided “Leia enjoyed the course and especially working with the little ones at their match day after. She has gone on to do some coaching courses in school so it was a good start. She would be a volunteer if you needed her for the smaller ones.”

“She really enjoyed the course, especially learning to deliver fun drills for younger children. Since completing it, she has been helping coach younger sessions with Clwb Hoci Caernarfon, and it has boosted her confidence. She now feels confident introducing her own drills and exercises, which she has enjoyed and has found the experience very positive.”

“Summer enjoyed how interactive the course was. She enjoyed making up a drill and trying each other’s ideas. The coach was always there giving you feedback. Summer has helped coach the year 8s hockey at lunch time.

Elusen Hoci Cymru Charity funded and supported the delivery of this project in Gwynedd.
