Gareth Furlong selected in GB Centralised Programme

Hockey Wales are delighted to announce Gareth Furlong’s selection to the GB centralised programme in the lead up to the FIH Pro League and Paris 2024 Olympics.

Gareth will be training with the squad at Bisham Abbey on a full-time basis as the GB side target an improved performance at this Summer’s Olympics following a strong qualification campaign in Oman earlier this year.

Having accumulated 148 International Senior outdoor caps for Wales and 99 goals, Gareth has been a key figure in the Welsh Senior Men’s team since his international debut in 2010.

Gareth, who plays domestic hockey for Surbiton HC, joins fellow Welsh teammates Rupert Shipperley, Jacob Draper and Toby Reynolds-Cotterill in accepting his place on the squad.

Speaking of his selection Gareth said: “I am obviously really happy to be given the opportunity to develop my hockey on a full time basis with such a talented squad.

I’ll certainly be looking to make the most of the opportunity moving towards Paris 2024 this summer.”

Hockey Wales Performance Director Kevin Johnson added:

“We are delighted to hear about Gareth's inclusion into the GB men's squad at an exciting time ahead of a busy International summer and the build up to the Olympic Games.

It is particularly pleasing that Gareth's consistent contributions in a Wales shirt at the highest level of tournaments in recent years have been recognised and we wish him all the best over the next few months as he joins an ever growing number of Welsh athletes taking their place on Great Britain World Class programmes."
