Hoci Cymru Announce Senior Men’s Squad for FIH Nations Cup 2025

Hoci Cymru have officially confirmed the selection of the Senior Men’s squad for the upcoming FIH Hockey Men’s Nations Cup, set to take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 15th to 21st June 2025.

The prestigious tournament gathers some of the world’s top-ranked national teams outside of the FIH Hockey Pro League, all competing for a highly sought-after promotion to the Pro League next season.

Rupert Shipperley and Ben Francis will co-captain the side and Gareth Furlong will be in line to score his 100th international goal for Wales and 150th international Cap.

A match appearance will also secure a first senior international cap for Sam Welsh.

Hoci Cymru are also delighted for the return of Rhys Payne in his first tournament selection since sustaining a knee injury at the men's World Cup in January 2023.

The squad are also thrilled to welcome recently retired GB and England men’s captain David Ames onto their coaching staff temporarily, he will be helping out with additional coaching support over the summer period and we look forward to welcoming his expertise.

This annual competition plays a crucial role in the international hockey calendar, serving as the gateway for elite teams striving to break into the highest tier of the sport.

This year’s tournament will operate under a dynamic promotion-relegation format. The winning team of the Nations Cup will earn promotion to the FIH Hockey Pro League, while the lowest-ranked team in the Pro League may be relegated. A similar system applies between the Nations Cup and Nations Cup 2, ensuring sustained competitiveness and encouraging consistent performance across all levels.

Last year’s champions, New Zealand, will return to defend their title. Wales will also face strong competition from an international lineup that includes France, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, and South Africa.

Ben Francis said:

“It’s very exciting to be back playing in Malaysia and great to get the opportunity to test ourselves against some of the top teams in the world and an important building block for the squad as we move towards our European Championship in July.”

Rupert Shipperley similarly commented:

“I am really excited to be heading back to Malaysia, always a great place to play hockey. It’s Wales’ first time competing in the Nations Cup, alongside some very competitive teams. We have a great blend of experience and youth amongst the squad and I am looking forward to seeing what we can achieve as a group!”
