Hoci Cymru delighted to support investment into facilities

Hoci Cymru is delighted to have supported Sport Wales investment into facilities to engage more young people and adults in hockey across Wales.

The additional investment comes after Hoci Cymru’s collaboration with Bala Hockey club, Rhondda Hockey Club, Sport Wales and local authorities on the respective projects.

Just over £1 million was invested by Sport Wales to either upgrade or create new artificial pitches which will improve opportunities for playing rugby, football and hockey.

Four projects have shared the funding during the last 12 months, with Hoci Cymru, as well as the FAW and WRU, helping to deliver the right types of artificial pitches in the right parts of Wales.

The two new hockey pitches will be at Ysgol Afon Wen (the updated name of Hawthorn High School) in Rhondda Cynin Taf and Ysgol Godre’r Berwyn in Gwenydd.

This funding also builds on significant investment in 2023.

In all, we have seen seven facilities benefit from Sport Wales since 2023, with a whole host of new opportunities for hockey participation subsequently provided for local communities across Wales.

  • Ysgol Bodedern has benefitted from a new 3G and ATP

  • Monmouth Comprehensive School has gained a new ATP

  • Cowbridge High School has a new half-pitch 3G and ATP

  • Elba has a new ATP

  • Cyfarthfa High School can boast a new ATP

Furthermore, new pitches in Bangor, Bridgend’s Brynteg School, and Ystalyfera have been provided with separate funding from leisure providers, universities and local authorities.

Hoci Cymru is thrilled to see new, top-quality community facilities open for local communities throughout the country, and look forward to seeing more and more people engage with hockey through these opportunities.

Hoci Cymru Director of Development and Participation, Joe Gage, commented:

“We’re so happy to have supported this fresh investment and add to the work that has been ongoing for the past 10 years, the result of which is more opportunities for people across Welsh communities to participate in hockey.

“We are determined to ensure that hockey is a game for all, so it’s vital to offer these environments in which the game, its participants, and the community can thrive.

“We’d like to thank everyone who made this investment and the projects possible and look forward to seeing the positive results!

“The development of these facilities takes a lot of collaboration and planning but if other stakeholders have ambition and opportunities for enhancing other locations, we would be delighted to begin conversations.”
