Hockey Wales are pleased to announce the selection of National Age Group Squads for 2024

Updated: Jan 31

Hockey Wales’ National Age Group Squads for 2024 will consist of 36 athletes selected after a series of assessment opportunities. The National Age Group will regularly train through regional sessions and come together collectively for training camps during weekends and holidays.

The squads will be meeting as a group to train intermittently throughout the year as they prepare for a range of competitions including the U16 EuroHockey 5s Championship, a 4 Nations tournament (with Ireland, Spain and Holland), as well as theEngland Hockey Talent Festival.

Talking of the squad, NAG U18 Girls Head Coach, Luke Stone said:

“Selection is always a tough stage in the pathway, with an abundance of exciting talent, this year was no exception. With the U16s preparing for their Euro 5s competition in the summer and the U18s taking a longer term look towards their Euros in summer 2025, it was an opportunity to bring in some young talent, with the scope of developing a strong squad to compete in Europe in 18 months time.

We’re really happy with the group we’ve selected, there is a lot of potential here and its job to help them unlock it. We know there are a number of girls who have missed out who will be disappointed and keen to prove us wrong over the next year, so we look forward to seeing them again at the next selection opportunity.”

Talking of the squad, U18 NAG Boys Head Coach, Mark Ramage, said:

“The U18 boys National Age Group squad for this year is overflowing with exciting talent. Myself and the coaching team are looking forward to the opportunity to work with this dynamic group of players as they prepare to represent Wales in the upcoming test matches scheduled over the next few months  .

These training sessions and matches will mark the inaugural international hockey experience for many of these young players, and I'm excited to observe how their technical and tactical abilities will be showcased in a high-pressure environment. The squad has already demonstrated their proficiency in playing a fast-paced and assertive style of hockey, and I've been thoroughly impressed by their rapid development leading up to the final selections.”

Pathway and Compliance Manager, Ella Jackson wrote:

“Congratulations to all those selected, you should be proud of your selection and excited for the year ahead. I am looking forward to see these groups build and develop individually and collectively over this next period. We have some exciting opportunities this year and hope that these players make the most of the experiences.”
