Y Bala celebrates the opening of a new community astro pitch

Recently, Y Bala’s community came together to celebrate the opening of an astro pitch at Ysgol Godre'r Berwyn, following significant renovation work to ensure a valuable asset for future generations.

Following the event, the youngest members of Y Bala Hockey Club held their first training session on the new surface to mark the official opening.

After years of use by the school, local community, and sports clubs, the original pitch had reached the end of its lifespan. In April 2025, a £250,000 upgrade was completed, delivering a modern surface suitable for a wide range of sports, along with new LED floodlights and dedicated equipment such as goals and maintenance equipment. Over the coming months, plans include adding a new storage area and installing team shelters to complete the project.

The project was made possible through a partnership between Y Bala Hockey Club, Ysgol Godre'r Berwyn, Cyngor Gwynedd and Hoci Cymru with generous contributions from Sport Wales via its Pitch Sports Collaboration group, made possible with Welsh Government funding; Eryri Communities Fund (Eryri National Park Authority); Community Regeneration Support Fund (Cyngor Gwynedd), and Nuclear Restoration Services.

In addition, local sports clubs, town and community councils, businesses and individuals contributed to the project, with even the youngest members of the hockey club raising money by selling handmade bracelets.

Lynda Williams, Chairperson of Y Bala Hockey Club said:

“Being able to officially open the new astro pitch is an extremely proud day for us as a club, this investment means that opportunities to play hockey will be able to continue in the Bala area for years to come and seeing so many under 10 players on it in the first official session gives us hope that the club has a prosperous future.”

Local Member for Y Bala ward, Councillor Dilwyn Morgan said:

“This brand-new astro pitch highlights the real value of working together for the benefit of our community. Everyone who contributed can be truly proud of their hard work and dedication in turning this ambitious vision into reality.”

Hoci Cymru Chief Executive, Paul Whapham, said:

“This collaboration, supported by the Welsh Government and the joint efforts of Cyngor Gwynedd, Hoci Cymru and Sport Wales, is a significant step toward our vision to ‘ignite a passion for hockey’ across Wales, creating inclusive spaces that allow ‘all to engage, compete and perform.”

Owen Hathway, Sport Wales’ Assistant Director for Insight, Policy and Public Affairs, said:

“Using funding that is made available by Welsh Government, we work in collaboration with the Football Association of Wales, the Welsh Rugby Union and Hoci Cymru to make sure that we invest in the right types of artificial pitches in the right parts of Wales to meet demand. This project certainly stood out as one worth supporting as it will be a fantastic asset for the local community.”

Y Bala yn dathlu agoriad cae astro cymunedol newydd

Yn ddiweddar, daeth cymuned Y Bala ynghyd i ddathlu agoriad swyddogol cae astro ar safle Ysgol Godre’r Berwyn, yn dilyn gwaith adnewyddu sylweddol i sicrhau ased gwerthfawr i’r cenedlaethau nesaf.

Ar ôl y digwyddiad dathlu, cynhaliodd aelodau ieuengaf Clwb Hoci Y Bala eu sesiwn hyfforddi gyntaf ar yr arwyneb newydd i nodi’r agoriad swyddogol.

Ar ôl blynyddoedd o ddefnydd gan yr ysgol, y gymuned a chlybiau chwaraeon, roedd y cae gwreiddiol wedi cyrraedd diwedd ei oes. Ym mis Ebrill 2025, cwblhawyd uwchraddiad gwerth £250,000, gan ddarparu arwyneb modern sy’n addas i amrywiaeth eang o weithgareddau chwaraeon, llifoleuadau LED newydd, ac offer pwrpasol fel goliau ac offer cynnal a chadw.  Bwriedir creu gofod storio newydd a gosod cysgodfeydd timau newydd dros y misoedd nesaf er mwyn cwblhau’r cynllun.

Cafodd y prosiect ei wneud yn bosibl trwy bartneriaeth rhwng Clwb Hoci Y Bala, Ysgol Godre’r Berwyn, Cyngor Gwynedd a Hoci Cymru gyda chyfraniadau hael gan Chwaraeon Cymru drwy ei Grŵp Cydweithredol Chwaraeon ar Gaeau, a wnaed yn bosibl gyda chyllid Llywodraeth Cymru; Cronfa Cymunedau Eryri (Awdurdod Parc Cenedlaethol Eryri); Cronfa Cefnogi Adfywio Cymunedau (Cyngor Gwynedd) a Nuclear Restoration Services.

Yn ogystal, cyfrannodd clybiau chwaraeon lleol, cynghorau tref a chymuned, busnesau ac unigolion i’r prosiect, gyda hyd yn oed aelodau ieuengaf y clwb hoci yn codi arian trwy werthu breichledau wedi'u gwneud â llaw.

Meddai Lynda Williams, Cadeirydd Clwb Hoci Y Bala:

“Mae cael agor y cae astro newydd yn swyddogol yn ddiwrnod hynod o falch i ni fel Clwb, mae’r buddsoddiad yma’n golygu y bydd cyfleoedd i chwarae hoci yn medru parhau yn ardal y Bala am flynyddoedd i ddod, ac mae gweld cynifer o chwaraewyr dan 10 arno yn y sesiwn swyddogol cyntaf yn rhoi gobaith i ni fod dyfodol llewyrchus i’r Clwb.”

Dywedodd Aelod Lleol ward y Bala, y Cynghorydd Dilwyn Morgan:

“Mae’r cae astro newydd sbon yma’n dangos gwir fuddion gweithio mewn partneriaeth er lles ein cymuned. Dylai pawb a gyfrannodd deimlo’n wirioneddol falch o’u gwaith caled a’u hymrwymiad i wireddu’r cynllun uchelgeisiol yma.”

Ychwanegodd Prif Weithredwr Hoci Cymru, Paul Wapham:

“Mae'r cydweithrediad hwn, a gefnogir gan Lywodraeth Cymru ac ymdrechion ar y cyd gan Gyngor Gwynedd, Hoci Cymru a Chwaraeon Cymru, yn gam arwyddocaol tuag at ein gweledigaeth i 'danio angerdd dros hoci' ledled Cymru, gan greu mannau cynhwysol sy'n caniatáu i 'bawb ennyn diddordeb, cystadlu a pherfformio.”
