Virtual Schools Awards

Hockey Wales are delighted to be holding a Virtual Schools Awards, this is the first of it’s kind for the national governing body.

 

We recognise the importance schools play in the development of Hockey in Wales and want to celebrate the individuals, schools, clubs and communities that make this growth possible! Without their on-going commitment, many young people would not have the opportunity to play hockey.

 

Within these awards we will also be celebrating the development of players within primary and secondary schools as one day they may be our future internationals. 

 

The awards and their criteria’s are below:

Primary School of the Year

Any primary school in Wales can be nominated. For a primary school who has engaged the most with Hockey Wales, through participation in any of the following aspects: o Hockey Festivals o Delivers hockey as an after-school activity or in PE lessons o Engages with Hockey Wales’s campaigns.

Secondary School of the Year

Any Secondary School in Wales can be nominated. The Award is for Secondary School’s who have engaged the most with Hockey Wales, through participation in any of the following aspects: o Delivers hockey as an after-school activity or in PE lessons o Engages with Hockey Wales’s campaigns o National competitions o Hockey Festivals

Primary Teacher/ Staff of the Year

Any staff member of a primary school can be nominated for this award. They must be doing one or more of the aspects below: o Fully supports and drives hockey forward in their school o Positively advocates for hockey o Provides opportunities to play and get involved in curricular and/or extra-curricular hockey o They signpost players to local clubs. o Actively encourages leadership from participants Without this person hockey may not happen at the school, Hockey Wales would like to thank this person for their hard work.

Secondary Teacher/ Staff of the Year

Any staff member of a Secondary School can be nominated for this award. They must be doing one or more of the aspects below: o Fully supports and drives hockey forward in their school o Positively advocates for hockey o Provides opportunities to play and get involved in curricular and/or extra-curricular hockey o They signpost players to local clubs or/and talent pathway o Actively encourages leadership from participants and/or supports Hockey Young Ambassadors in their school. Without this person hockey may not happen at the school, Hockey Wales would like to thank this person for their hard work.

School - Club Engagement Award 

o Either a club or school can be nominated for this award o It is to recognise the hard work a school or a club has done to bridge the gap for players to continue their hockey development at a club level. o This could be seen through a club coach delivering sessions at a school and there being an increase in players at the club and school hockey thriving.

Hockey Young Ambassador of the Year

o Is a recognised Hockey Wales Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum Hockey Young Ambassador o Dedicates their time to volunteering in their hockey club or schools to contributes to the development of hockey participation. o They are a positive role model that inspires and contributes towards the development of others o They have a continuously positive attitude towards personal development o Vol Hours and attendance at events will be taken into consideration as well as personal achievements.

Local Authority Award

Hockey Wales works closely with all 22 Local Authorities in Wales to ensure hockey is thriving. This award recognises a local authority who has: o Helped hockey grow through promoting our initiatives o Delivered hockey festivals for schools in their area o Supported the hockey clubs in their LA.

Primary Participant of the Year

A primary school staff member/ hockey facilitator must nominate a student for this award. This award is for an individual who: o Has developed their hockey skills as a player o Is an active promoter of hockey within the school, encouraging others to play. o Is a positive role model to their peers on and off the pitch.

Secondary Participant of the Year

A secondary school staff member/ hockey facilitator must nominate a student for this award. This award is for an individual who: o Has developed their hockey skills as a player o Is an active promoter of hockey within the school, encouraging others to play. o Is a positive role model to their peers on and off the pitch.

School Inclusion Award

This award is for the school who has strived to make hockey as inclusive as possible. This could have been done through: o Encouraging boys hockey participation. o Providing hockey to those who are disengaged in physical activity o Running Smash hockey (targeting areas of social deprivation) or Flyerz hockey (hockey for those with an intellectual disability or any other disability) o Improving access to hockey for those in rural areas.
