Fishguard & Goodwick Hockey Club have collaborated with Pembrokeshire Leisure to offer walking hockey sessions for their local community.

The sessions have already offered a vital opportunity to stay active and socially connected for many in the community, proving very successful so far with 49 attendees taking up the option to join in. The club has delivered four of the walking hockey sessions to date, welcoming up to 16 participants each time.

"Walking hockey offers a vital opportunity for all our community to stay active, connected, and engaged," Pembrokeshire Leisure told Hoci Cymru.

"It’s a fun, inclusive way to improve health and wellbeing, while also helping reduce loneliness through social connection. By creating a welcoming space for all abilities, walking hockey strengthens community ties and supports healthier, happier lifestyles.

"By collaborating with the hockey club, it’s great to involve current and past players too."

And players have been feeling the benefits of the initiative, from rekindling their love of hockey to simply socialising with others.

Participants have said:

"I hadn’t picked up a stick in over 15 years and it’s a great feeling having a go at Hockey again."

"I’ve moved to the area and seen that this opportunity was available so thought I’d come and give it a go as hockey has played a big part in my life. If my body doesn’t allow me to play, then I can enjoy the social aspect of it."

"It’s enjoyable. I’m glad I’ve been coming to the session to improve my skill, socialise with new people and work on my fitness."

"Having been brought up in an environment where the value of sport wasn't recognised, I have benefited greatly from this opportunity and am looking forward to seeing what possibilities exist in the future. I am very grateful to Rob Codd and the team at Fishguard leisure centre/hockey club for this opportunity."

If you want to get involved in these walking hockey sessions, they take place every Wednesday evening from 18:30 to 19:30 at Fishguard Astroturf.

The final session is scheduled for Wednesday 20 August but the club hopes to continue them with the support of partners.
