Hoci Cymru is deeply saddened by the news of Alan Rookes’ passing.

West country-born Alan was a large figure in Welsh hockey throughout his life, holding numerous roles in the sport, both on and off the field.

Alan was a member of Newport Hockey Club for over 30 years, where he shone as a goalkeeper, forward and captain for the firsts before taking on the role of Chairman at the club.

Beyond club life, Alan represented Gwent County on many occasions and even captained the ‘Vandals’, the south Wales invitational team.

His involvement in the sport was just as active beyond his days on the field.

Following his decision to stop playing, Alan became a member of the Welsh Hockey Umpires Association and headed the WHU Management and Executive Committees.

Notably, Alan also became Hoci Cymru’s second Chair in 1998 following the merger of the Welsh Hockey Association and Welsh Women's Hockey Association.

Hoci Cymru CEO, Paul Whapham, stated:

“Everyone at Hoci Cymru is deeply saddened by the passing of Alan Rookes.

“Alan was always an influential character during his affiliation with the sport, whether that be as a club captain or, later on, our organisation’s Chair, and contributed a great deal throughout his life.

“Our thoughts are with Alan’s friends and family at this difficult time.”

Funeral arrangements will be circulated in due course.
