How your Hoci Cymru membership helps our sport develop across Wales

Being a Hoci Cymru member is not just about signing up to play; when you register or renew, you’re a part of something much bigger, supporting the sport’s development and growth across Wales.

In being a Hoci Cymru member, you’re investing in things such as:

  • Free hockey sessions for underserved communities

  • Coach and umpire education systems

  • School hockey partnerships

  • Continue to deliver 27 competitions and multiple events

  • Governance and our work to ensure we are a safe sport.

  • Advocacy with Welsh Government and Sport Wales to keep hockey on their agenda

  • County Development pathways for talented young players and coaches.

With our restructured membership and your continued support, we will continue to ensure that hockey in Wales is sustainable and prosperous.

That prosperity has been evident over the past year, with some memorable success stories coming out of Welsh hockey.

Our support of investments into grassroots facilities have seen clubs in Swansea, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Gwynedd benefit from game-changing upgrades, maximising training and match experiences.

Hoci Cymru strives to engage as many people as possible and has undertaken much work to do so over the past year, for example working alongside Cwmtawe Hockey club, Sports Powys, Ysgol Maesydderwen and Freedom Leisure Ystradgynlais to deliver a Primary School Festival at which 200 pupils were in attendance. Cwmtawe’s hockey club’s junior section has tripled since the festival and now attend more hockey events.

There have been numerous highlights across competitions over the last year, too – none more so than the National Finals weekend in May. As a celebration of hockey boomed in Swansea over a memorable weekend, 500 medals were distributed. 36 teams participated, representing 13 different clubs to showcase of the talent and quality that exists across our community game.

Meanwhile, Hoci Cymru’s commitment to the people that make up our community has been exemplified by our Young Ambassador programme, equipping young people with key life skills and the tools to develop as people as well as players. A former YA, Lily Morgan was named Youth Sport Trust Young Activist of the Year back in November for her exceptional commitment to advocating for and raising awareness about neurodiversity in sport.

You can find even more example of the work that goes into enabling hockey thrive across Wales in our Annual Report, here

Amid significant funding cuts, the recently announced update to our membership structure will ensure that essential investment continues to go back into the sport.
